Richard Altman’s Marshall McLuhan Mashup is a ‘visual punning’ of Marshall McLuhan’s 1968 album the The Medium is the Massage. You may remember the famed collage video Sociology 666 Altman made with Seb Capone in 1996 – a video that was at least 10 years ahead of its time. Since that point, Altman has made several innovative collage videos, often citing his sources and providing download links, creating hyper-referential videos in the postmodern pastiche while making us aware of the copyright infringement involved and while providing us with a how to guide for breaking copyright laws ourselves. Altman’s work can also be seen as an extension of Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle in the sense that the work is intentionally convoluted in order to force us to become be better spectators.
