Bands vs. Filmmakers [Part Deux aka. Extravaganza!]

Bands vs. Filmmakers is going to be a spectacle! There I said it.

Although I can hardly be considered impartial, I’m going to predict right now that this year’s Cinematheque fundraiser Bands vs. Filmmakers II will be one of the best local shows of 2012. Oh hell, it could even be the best! It’s obvious really… just look at the facts.

Five stellar Winnipeg musical acts (Canon Bros, This Hisses, SitDownTracy, The Magnificent 7s and the Greg MacPherson side-project Nova capping off the night) will be gracing the West End Cultural Centre stage. And for each act, an impeccably talented Winnipeg filmmaker has been paired up to do live visuals (Stephane Oystryk, Scott Fitzpatrick, Rhayne Vermette, Curtis Wiebe, and Danishka Esterhazy… respectively)! And as if that isn’t enough, the pride of Winnipeg Sylvia Kuzyk will be hosting the show.

A good friend once told me that he appreciated Winnipeg – above the countless other places he lived – because the artistic crowds of varying disciplines seemed to mingle and mix so proficiently. If anything, this event is a great example of that. Over a dozen musicians playing for free in support of an independent movie theatre, and five very talented filmmakers volunteering their time, effort, blood, sweat and splices to create a combined total of 2.5 hours of original backdrops for said musicians.

But enough preaching. I must stop harping and rest my vocal chords for what is sure to be an amazing show and an unforgettable night!
